Anything & Everything Friday – May 27th

May 27, 2016 by johnson_mel@hotmail.com

Friday

Can you imagine finding this carrot in your garden? That’d be awesome.

Yay it is Friday! Even better, it is Friday before a 3-day weekend! Boomshakalaka is all I can say. Not a ton going on this weekend, which is nice. We have date night tonight (see below), we are doing a Cajun boil tomorrow night and then I’m planning to go with my sister up to Denver to do some mad shopping! I am in need of new sandals, shorts, and some tops for warmer weather. Donny will be gone Sunday & Monday so I’ll have lots of time to meal prep and create recipes. Ayo, sounds like a good weekend to me! What are your plans?

Time for Anything & Everything Friday. Today the topics include sunscreen, busy mornings, and our date night location tonight!

Sunscreen:

I am a firm believer that everyone needs to wear sunscreen. My grandma was a nurse and has always been good about getting us kids to put it on. She also taught my mom the importance of sunscreen so my mom has also influenced us. I’m not great about wearing it every time I go outside (my face products do contain it though). However, if I know I am going golfing, doing yard work, or other outdoor activities in the heat of the day then I will definitely wear it. Did you know that you also need to wear it when it is cloudy out?!?! Yes, not just when it is super sunny. That little tidbit of information was from yours truly, but Alice Gelula with Well & Good compiled a list of 10 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Sunscreen (But Really Should) . It finally seems like we will have constant warm weather here in Colorado so get that dang sunscreen out! Colorado has more sunny days (or at least the sun comes out, even briefly, on more days of the year) than any other state in the United States. We definitely need sunscreen here! Check out that article and then go stock up to save your skin!

BBQ Choices:

Memorial weekend is a big weekend for BBQs. I love BBQs but they are not known to have the most healthy food options. I love a splurge every once in a while, but if I allowed BBQs to be my splurge then I would be in constant splurge-mode almost all summer…. no Bueno. Alexa Tucker made this list for Self.com Here’s What To Eat At A BBQ If You Are Trying To Eat Healthy. Obviously fruits and veggies make the list, but there are some other good options as well. My favorite: corn on the cob! If you are worried there won’t be any healthy options then be the one to bring a veggie-packed side dish or bean salad.

Busy Mornings:

Do you feel crazy-busy in the morning before work? Does it stress you out to rush around getting ready in the AM? I HATE being busy and rushed in the morning. It just makes me feel like my day starts off on the wrong foot. If you find yourself feeling rushed and wish you weren’t, then check out these 6 Ways To Make Your Mornings Less Hectic from Greatist.com. When I first started working out with Jodi we had class at 6:30am. It has slowly gotten earlier and earlier and now I’m back home and eating breakfast by 6:30am. However when it was later in the morning I had to get home and get ready really quick to make it work by 8:00am. I found little ways to speed things up. My favorite tip is to get as much ready the night before as possible. Make breakfast. Set clothes out for the next day. Have your lunch/meals packed. Get as much done the night before as possible to make the next morning less busy. Need some quick breakfast ideas? How about Strawberry Banana Overnight Oats? Or Mocha Chia Pudding? You’re welcome.

Bones:

I have wanted to go to this restaurant Bones since we went to Mizuna, which was forever ago! Bones is part of the Frank Bonanno empire that is in Denver right now. I’m not even mad about it. He does a great job! One of his more famous restaurants is Mizuna, but also Osteria Marco. Both are so good! The only other one I’ve been to is Salt & Grinder, but I’ve heard great things about all of his restaurants. Bones, however, has been at the top of my list for a while now and we are finally going. It is Asian cuisine and they have Lobster Ramen on their menu. Lobster. Ramen. Whhaaattt?!?!?! I think I just died and went to heaven. I’ve heard amazing reviews about that dish in particular, but also that the restaurant is awesome. There is something about ramen and miso soup that makes my mouth water. I just love it SO much! I’m sure we’ll get steam buns, possibly the scallops, and maybe the crispy Brussels sprouts. And then we’ll get ramen of course! We’ll be quite full leaving, but extremely happy I’m sure!

Book Club:

We had  book club earlier this week. It was pushed back a week due to schedule conflicts, which was good because that extra week helped me actually finish the book! Last week I discussed The Power of One with you briefly. I struggled through the first 200 pages and then finally got into a groove. I still wasn’t hooked on the book and if we hadn’t picked it for book club then I would never have finished it! I did like it, but definitely didn’t love it. I should re-read the first part again because maybe it will make more sense to me and I’ll be more into it.

This month we chose You Before Me by Jojo Moyes. I guess it is being turned into a movie that actually comes out next week. It stars Sam Claflin, who played Finnick in the Hunger Games Catching Fire & both Mockingjay films. I actually really like him! Emilia Clarke is his co-star and she’s been on Game of Thrones. I’m not too familiar with her to be honest. If the movie makes it to town we are going to try to get most of us together to go see it! Well, as long as we’ve finished the book by then. Here is a link to the trailer from imdb.com (one of my favorite sites). Have you read this book before?

Well that is all for this Friday. Have a great weekend (hopefully EXTENDED weekend).
