Metabolic Leg Workout

November 4, 2014 by johnson_mel@hotmail.com

I am super excited because Donny & I leave for vacation in 4 days!!! We are not really lay-by-the-beach-for-hours type of people so we rarely go to tropical places for very long. However, our wonderful friend Jamie is getting married on Sunday in Cancun and we are going! It should be awesome.

I was a little nervous about putting a bathing suit on with my ghost-white legs. Those poor things haven’t seen daylight in months. I bought a new suit a while back that is mint colored. I love it, but I can imagine myself scaring small children when I wear it with no tan.

Brussels Sprouts with Spicy Sausage

Brussel Sprouts with Spicy Sausage

Brussels sprouts seem to get a bad rap. They are such a wonderful vegetable I just think people don’t always know how to make them. Soft, mushy Brussels sprouts = gross. Crispy, but still tender Brussels sprouts = delicious! I think the key to Brussels sprouts is how you cook them. [Read more…]

Orange Blueberry Basil Infused Water

Have you been watching The Voice? Do you have any favorites? I am yet to find someone this season that I have fell in love with…but it is still early! There are definitely some potential candidates to steal my heart. I tend to lean more towards male voices rather than females, but there are some really awesome girls on the show too. I may not have a favorite contestant yet, but I am loving both Gwen Stefani and Pharrell. Where have they been the whole show?!? They are amazing. I liked Usher and I thought Shakira did alright but man, I love these four judges this season. Are you enjoying them? [Read more…]

Apple Pie Oatmeal

Apple Pie Oatmeal

As much as I love fresh fruits and vegetables coming straight from the garden during the summer…I think fall might be my favorite time of year for in-season produce. Pumpkin. Sweet potatoes. Winter squash. Apples. Cranberries. Pears. So many awesome flavors! Not only do these foods taste better in the fall, but they are cheaper to buy at the grocery store! Next time you are at the grocery store or if you pick up a grocery store flier, check out what is on sale. A lot of times it is the foods that are in-season. [Read more…]

Pumpkin No Bake Cookies

Donny & I spent the night in Denver Friday night. Sadly, we are getting old! We had dinner at a fun restaurant that had a pretty extensive beer list. I had one called “Gore’d” and it was a pumpkin beer. What?!?! I love it. We then made it our mission to find the best pumpkin beer in Denver. [Read more…]

Date Night at Acorn

October 12, 2014 by johnson_mel@hotmail.com

So, I married a foodie and he is slowly but surely turning me into a foodie as well! One of our favorite things to do for “date night” is to either cook a nice dinner together at home or go out to a cool restaurant. This particular date night included one of the best restaurants in Denver: Acorn. (Literally one of the best, 5280 Magazine just came out with their annual list of the Top 25 Restaurants in Denver and Acorn is #2!!) [Read more…]

Pumpkin Pie Protein Shake

Pumpkin Pie Protein Shake

Well hello fall and hello pumpkin! The weather in Colorado has been absolutely fantastic. Sunny and mid-70s. Perfect. I would say that it has been hard to get into fall-recipe-mode because it has been such nice weather but, that my friend, would be a lie. It could be 100 degrees outside and I would still love pumpkin. I must not be the only one because Pinterest is flooded with pumpkin recipes. I do not mind at all – I even have an entire board that is dedicated to everything pumpkin….  [Read more…]

Happy Monday! We have been crazy busy at work the last few weeks…well basically all of September! I finally got some much-needed R&R this last weekend. It was fantastic. Plus…. tomorrow is September 30th meaning it is almost October! I love October!!! I am pretty sure it is my favorite month of the year. Football is in full swing, the leaves start changing, it becomes completely appropriate to have pumpkin-flavored things at EVERY meal! I have slowly started making a few pumpkin-recipes and I will be sharing those with you soon…… [Read more…]

Treadmill HIIT

September 24, 2014 by johnson_mel@hotmail.com

I know I have announced my love of lifting several times and I still find strength training to be the best way to lose a few inches off the ol’ middle. However, I also do cardio on a weekly basis. I generally warm up with some type of cardio (elliptical, stair master, treadmill) before lifting, but I rarely spend more than 20 minutes doing so. On days that I do not lift, I try to spend a little more time doing cardio. Personally, my favorite type of cardio is high-intensity interval training, or HIIT.  [Read more…]

Back-Abs-Calf Staggered Set

September 21, 2014 by johnson_mel@hotmail.com

I am no personal trainer. In fact, I pay someone else to train me! On non-bootcamp days, if I choose to lift I will sometimes just use different moves that I have learned over the years and incorporate them into supersets or trisets. Another resource that I use to get some new and fresh moves is Oxygen magazine. I have a subscription for the print version and I love the content. It talks about fitness and nutrition for women, with an emphasis on weight training.  [Read more…]
