Anything & Everything Friday – July 15

July 15, 2016 by johnson_mel@hotmail.com

Friday

Happy Friday! I missed an Anything & Everything Friday post last week. I had intended to get one put together and things just got TOO hectic with Bobstock. I thought about throwing one together really quick, but decided it wasn’t worth it if I half-assed it. You’re welcome! Today I have some news on Dougie Fresh, some awesome desk accessories and tips to stay confident on the weight room floor.

Dougie Fresh:

Wednesday of last week I came home from work and when I got out of my car I heard Doug yelping in the garage. I immediately panicked and went to pick him up from the doggies’ caged area. I took him inside and he was acting really weird. He wouldn’t put weight on his back right leg and wasn’t moving too much in general. He was panting, but I couldn’t get him to drink water even if I brought it all the way to him. It started getting me super worried even though I could touch his leg and move it around without him hurting. I finally called Donny and then my dad to have them come check him out to make sure I wasn’t just being crazy. My dad stopped by and we thought maybe it was a muscle spasm in his leg.

I ended up calling the vet later that night just to be sure. She said he might have torn his puppy-ACL (it has a different name, but I don’t know what it is). We took him in that night so she could check it out. He hadn’t torn the entire ligament, but it definitely had a little damage. She gave us some pain killers, but said Doug needed to be on bed rest for two straight weeks!!! She suggested keeping him in a kennel, which he has never been in. Yikes. He has been kenneled for about 10 days now and he does not like it! Poor Kevin hates being outside by himself and Doug hates being stuck in a kennel in the house by himself. No Bueno! Of course all of this happened right before Bobstock – my busiest weekend of the year! We managed, but the poor doggies are not happy. I think I might spoil them by ordering a Bark Box. What do you think?!?!

Inspiring Workout Songs:

Do you listen to music while you exercise? I used to always have my iPod on with some up-beat music playing, however, I don’t do that anymore. Jodi plays music during bootcamp and the gym has a overhead sound system that plays music, but I don’t create my own playlists or anything. However, maybe I should! If you listen to music or create your own playlists then check out this list of the 100 Most Motivating Workout Songs of All Time from SparkPeople.com. Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire”, Angels & Airwaves “The Adventure”, Bon Jovi “Livin’ On A Prayer”, David Guetta & Sia “Titanium”….I mean come on! The list is in alphabetical order and there are some great song on there! Definitely a wide range of genres and the music spans several decades. I dig it! If you don’t use this list for a workout playlist then it can double as a list for some Friday-Afternoon-At-Work jams!

French Fries:

This last Wednesday was National French Fry Day! What a great celebration. I love French fries, but I don’t tend to do too much fried food these days so I don’t eat fries much. I occasionally make homemade fries (for example earlier this week we grilled sweet potato fries — see them in in Meal #5 of yesterday’s Day in the Life: Mel’s Meals). In my opinion nothing can substitute for freshly deep-fried French fries, but when trying to eat clean you can make some good alternatives. Check out this list from MyFitness Pal of 10 Healthier Alternatives for Chips & Fries. I am quite intrigued by the pear chips and the homemade pita chips. Yum! I might have to try to make my own pita chips….

Confidence in the Weight Room:

Do you avoid lifting weights because you’re intimidated by it? Are you intimidated by the other people in the gym? Intimidated by the machines and free weights? Not knowing what to do? All of the above maybe?!?!?! I would hate if that was the case. I was lucky and got a handle on my gym and the weights because of the bootcamp that I signed up for. We worked out on the same floor as everyone else and Jodi was there to explain what and how to do everything. I also started watching a lot of online videos and tutorials for certain lifts. Bodybuilding.com has great how-to videos for tons of exercises. If your nerves are keeping you from stepping on the weight room floor then read this article by Molly Galbraith for SparkPeople.com How To Feel Less Intimidated In the Weight Room. It has some great tips like asking for a tour from your gym. They can walk you around and show you different equipment, etc. Buddy up is another tip – take a friend and plan to lift together. My favorite tip is to have a plan. It is important to have a plan with any exercise routine, but if you have a plan before you hit the weight room floor then you’ll already know what exercises you want to do. You can research ahead of time if you are trying new moves to get the proper technique. Check out the other tips in the link above.

Desk Accessories:

Wouldn’t the work day be more fun if you were using a hot-dog stapler? Or donut-shaped thumbtacks?!?! Is it just me? Check out these 15 Food-Themed Desk Accessories That Will Help You Get Through The Day from Delish.com. I honestly want the thumbtacks, the macaroon erasers, the donut mousepad and the toaster paper clip magnet. So awesome!

That is it for today! Have a great weekend.
