Happy Friday! It is time for Anything & Everything Friday, where I discuss five random things with you. I try to keep them health-related, but not always. Sometimes you just have to throw a video in that has David Beckham in his undies. On that note, let’s get started!
St. Louis: Donny & I are heading to St. Louis this weekend! It is my Christmas/Birthday/Thanks-for-being-my-nurse present. He bought us tickets to go see Mumford & Sons!!! I am SUPER excited. I have wanted to see them for a long time now. While we are there we are also meeting up with Donny’s friend, Henry, who happens to be driving through St. Louis on his way to New Orleans, LA. We are all three going to dinner together at Acero, which is a “Midwest Italian” restaurant….whatever that means! It is suppose to be awesome so that is all I care about! We will also go see the Arch, tour Anheuser Busch, hang out in The Loop, and catch a Cardinals game. It will be fairly quick, but an awesome trip. We will for sure be making a stop at Ted Drewes for frozen custard. Have you heard of it? We were watching Best Thing I Ever Ate the other night and it was on there. There is no way I can go all the way to St. Louis and NOT go there. I LOVE ice cream and I love super thick ice cream. I must get Ted Drewes! How can it be a bad trip with custard, Mumford, baseball, and all sorts of food?!?!?
David Beckham’s New Underwear Line: Do you watch the Late Late Show with James Corden? I do not, but I see funny clips online every once in a while when I prep for my radio show. This particular video was sent through Greatist.com’s daily emails and it is hilarious. I didn’t read much about it, so I thought it was a real commercial at first! If you don’t think James Corden is funny, then simply watch the video to see David Beckham in his underwear. Worth it!
The Truth About Baby Carrots: Donny mentioned this to me the other day and I was shocked. Then I forgot about all it…..until I saw the headline “Lies” pop up online with a picture of some baby carrots. I remembered that same shock from before! Baby carrots are not a special type of carrot. They are actually regular sized carrots, peeled down to a small size. In fact, they take the ugly, unappealing looking carrots to make baby carrots. Who knew?!?!? I know I didn’t! I did wonder how they looked so uniform….. check out the full article by Carla Herreria “In Case You Didn’t Already Know, Baby Carrots Are A Big Fat Lie“. I guess back in the ’80s grocery stores only bought carrots that looked nice. One farmer decided to take his ugly carrots and make them look nice, instead of throwing them out. He sliced them and peeled them, then sold them to grocery stores. They were a huge hit and still are! In fact, baby carrots are 70% of all carrot sales. Rock on Carrot-Farmer-Man, rock on.
Dehyrdration: We all know the obvious sign of dehydration: dark pee. However, there are a lot of other symptoms of dehydration. Since last week I shared with you the article about drinking a gallon of water a day, so this week I thought we’d talk about lack of water. 9 Signs of Dehydration by Amy Marturana was found on Self.com and goes through several signs (nine in fact, crazy) to look for in case you are dehydrated and don’t know it. I drink a ton of water, but I definitely notice some of these signs when I have not been drinking enough water (weekends, traveling, etc). One of the most important ones is energy levels. I don’t necessarily notice how much energy I have from the amount of water I drink, but I definitely notice it when I haven’t been getting enough! I feel lethargic and tired for no reason. Now grab a liter of water, drink up, and take a minute to read the article!
Sources of Sugar: Sugar is everywhere! You know the typical treats to avoid if you are trying to cut back on sugar: cookies, cake, muffins, pop, etc. Well, there are actually a lot of foods that have way more sugar that you expect. For example, peanut butter. Did you know that quite a few store-bought peanut butter brands add sugar? Make sure you look at nutrition labels if you are watching your sugar intake. Not just the sugar content, because that can be misleading sometimes. Look at the ingredient list. You might find sugar on the list, but look for some other tricky words that mean sugar including corn syrup, evaporated cane juice, fruit juice concentrate, fructose, maltose, sucrose, rice syrup, etc. Also, read this article on Bodybuilding.com 4 Sneaky Sources of Sugar by Matthew Kadey. The four foods he talks about (yogurt, peanut butter, tomato sauce, and almond milk) CAN be found without any sugar added, so he also gives some tips to finding the right products for those foods.
Well that is all. Have a great weekend!
