That’s a whole lotta love right there…. am I right?!
Happy Friday! Time for Anything & Everything Friday where I discuss a few random things with you….generally health-related, but not always. Today the topics span from drinking water, to healthy snacks, to the Masters. Here we go…..
Drinking A Gallon of Water: Wil Fulton, writer for Thrillist.com, wrote a pretty hilarious article about drinking a gallon of water per day. “I Drank a Gallon of Water a Day for 30 Days. Here’s What Happened” is worth the read. He took part is what is being called the “Water Gallon Challenge”. He is not a die-hard fitness guy or anything. I believe Wil did this challenge simply to write the article. Water is super important for you. I do happen to drink at least a gallon of water every weekday, but I use liter water bottles rather than lugging around an entire gallon. He does joke quite a bit about having to lug around an entire gallon of water. He talks about the pros and cons of drinking a gallon of water per day, but adds a nice touch of humor to the article (which I can appreciate).
Smoothies: While we are talking about beverages, let’s talk smoothies! I’ve mentioned this before….. I am a huge fan of smoothies, but they can be tricky. I prefer to have smoothies during the warmer months (think April through October in Colorado), so I am getting into my smoothie-season. Self.com has an article that might help you build a better smoothie. “8 Things You Should Know About Making Smoothies If You’re Trying To Lose Weight” is written by Zahra Barnes and goes through things to add to your smoothies and things to leave out if you are trying to lose weight. A lot of people say that when they drink smoothies they are hungry 30 minutes later. That can very well happen. Sometimes I think people just blend fruit with milk and hope to stay full. That won’t happen. Try adding a few extra ingredients for staying power, but be smart about it! I definitely add protein to my smoothies (I use protein powder, but cottage cheese or yogurt would work well too) and I like to add oats too! My staples for a smoothie include almond milk, spinach cubes (see how I make them here), chia seed, protein powder, and frozen fruit. I start with the flavor of protein first, then build the rest around that particular flavor. Sometimes I’ll leave the oats out of my smoothie and have a piece of toast on the side. That way I get to actually chew something, not just drink it. What are your favorite add-ins for smoothies?
Snacks: I like snacks! I even venture to say that I love snacks. Throughout the week I have small meals, but occasionally on the weekend or when we go on a trip I like to pack typical snacks. Trail mix/nut mixes, granola bars, popcorn, etc. Here is another link to Self.com that shares some snack ideas from real Registered Dieticians. In fact, the article is titled 11 Registered Dietitians Share Their Favorite Drugstore Snacks and they offer some great ideas that are widely available. Convenience stores are starting to step up their game and are offering a few healthy options including fresh fruit, yogurt, healthy snack bars like Quest and Kind. If you are on vacation you could stop by a drugstore, such as a Walgreens, Rite Aid, or CVS, and pick up some healthy snack foods. I typically pack a bunch in my carry on and/or checked bag for the week! If I end up nothing eating all of them, then I simply bring them all back!
Coors Field: Today is Opening Day at Coors Field! I have never been to Opening Day but I hear it is a blast, especially if the weather is good. Lori Midson put together this list for Zagat of Where to Eat and Drink at Coors Field, Home Turf of the Rockies. There is even a spot inside Coors Field that serves gluten-free quesadillas! I am personally more intrigued by Blue Moon Brewery and Rio on the Rocks… but quesadillas are good too!
Hole-in-One: Hole-in-ones are not super common. In fact, the odds of an average golfer like myself hitting a hole-in-one is about 150,000 to 1. I have heard of people hitting them, but I’ve never done it and I’ve never been with someone who hit one. The odds of hitting a hole-in-one is obviously higher if you are a professional golfer, rather than an average golfer like me. The odds of a professional golfer hitting a hole-in-one is around 2,500 to 1. The Master’s Par 3 Contest was on Wednesday and two golfer’s hit a hole-in-one. Back-to-back! They were in the same group. So crazy! Justin Thomas walked up and hit a hole-in-one. Immediately after that Ricky Fowler hit one on the same hole. Wild. Check out the video of each here. Each one is less than 30 seconds so it won’t take long. Plus, it is super cool if you have ever played golf!
Well that is everything for today. Have a fantastic weekend!
