Metabolic Leg Workout

November 4, 2014 by johnson_mel@hotmail.com

I am super excited because Donny & I leave for vacation in 4 days!!! We are not really lay-by-the-beach-for-hours type of people so we rarely go to tropical places for very long. However, our wonderful friend Jamie is getting married on Sunday in Cancun and we are going! It should be awesome.

I was a little nervous about putting a bathing suit on with my ghost-white legs. Those poor things haven’t seen daylight in months. I bought a new suit a while back that is mint colored. I love it, but I can imagine myself scaring small children when I wear it with no tan.

There are a few options to get rid of the whiteness, but I decided to try a spray tan for the first time. I am not going to lie, I was really nervous. I know they have come a long way in the years they have been around, but all I could think about was Willy Wonka’s gaggle of Oompa Loompas. (and the answer is no, “gaggle” is most likely not the correct term for a group on Oompa Loompas but if you say it with confidence then no one will know the difference!) However, my friend Kortni…..the wonderful sales woman that she is…convinced me that I would love a spray tan so much and even offered to do a test run.  She gave me a little discount for booking two….so I did. Last Friday I got my very first spray tan. It is amazing. She was 100% right. I love it. I plan to get my second one right before we leave for Mexico. Yay!!! Thanks Kort.

Anyway, besides getting spray tanned we have been pretty busy lately (hence the lack of blog posting). For the last 4 years Donny has been hired to cater a very fancy dinner for the Heritage Foundation (a foundation for the Fort Morgan Museum). It is a five course meal served in the museum. Yes, IN the museum. Does your museum have a kitchen in it? Well Fort Morgan’s does not. Why would you need one? So Donny has to create a “kitchen” to cook the entire five course menu on site. It is pretty impressive….he gets quite creative!

I have been trying to work on my food photography skills so I decided to take some photos of the different courses.  I am working on sifting through and editing those and will post about the dinner later this week! It was awesome. People told Donny it was the best menu yet. Quick disclosure: this five course menu is less then clean. It is delicious…probably because of the amounts of butter, cream, and oil he uses. But he does one heck of a job so I have to be a good wife and brag a little bit!

Alright, moving on to a quick, but difficult leg workout. This is a metabolic leg workout and the goal of a metabolic workout is to limit the amount of rest between exercises. It involves supersets combining a strength or even compound move with another more plyometric move. I actually came across this workout when I was on Facebook. I follow FitnessRX Women and they post some cool videos of different moves or links to articles that are on their website. This particular one caught my eye and it even came with a fancy schmancy “Print & Go” visual. It is actually a series of metabolic workouts sponsored by NLA for Her and it is called “Get Metabolic with Lais DeLeon”. In total, I believe there are 3 parts; Part 1 was chest & shoulders and Part 3 is a high intensity leg circuit. The one I tried was Part 2 and was leg supersets. It can be found here. I really liked it so I might just have to try the other two.

I did the leg workout as written, but I did add a couple more moves after these two supersets. For my third superset I did plie squats with a 75# dumbbell and superset that with side shuffles on the treadmill. I did: 30s facing left, then: 30s facing right. I completed that superset for 3 rounds. To finish this little workout I did three 1-minute wall sits. In between each wall sit I paced around the gym for about 1 minute, just to keep blood flowing.

Let me tell you, this got me sweaty! I think what got me the most was the very first superset. Split squat jumps are difficult on their own, but doing barbell squats and those together with not very much rest in between was killer on the ol’ legs! Try not to stop in between sets or mid-set. If anything, slow down your pace and keep going uninterrupted.

Again, I will try to get pictures of Donny’s dinner up pretty quick. I do not guarantee that I will have recipes….but if you ask real nice I can get some info from the chef himself!

Have you spray tanned before?! Did you like it?
